What a beautiful example of Cloisonne art! These pieces were purchased in China during the 1950's. The history behind this art form is fascinating! Baoding balls date back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) in China and were considered symbols of luck and fortune. While Cloisonne was initially developed in the Middle East during the Byzantium period, it was introduced to China during the Yuan Dynasty. This technique quickly gained popularity and became highly refined during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE). It was extensively used for imperial art and decorative objects. These creations begin with copper or bronze strips that are shaped and polished into a desired form. Next, very fine strips of brass or copper wire are affixed onto the metal form. The wires act as partitions or compartments that are then filled with an enamel paste that is carefully applied using a fine brush or spatula. The object is then fired in a kiln at a high temperature (usually around 800 or 900 degrees Celsius) which allows the enamel to melt and fuse together forming a smooth glass surface. Once cooled down, the surface is polished using a mixture of abrasive materials to remove any imperfections. The process of firing, polishing and applying enamel is repeated multiple times which gives depth and richness to the colors and enhances the overall effect of the design. This cherished art form requires great skill and patience. Chinese artisans have honed their techniques and have been passing them down for generations. Chinese Cloisonne, renowned for its intricate design and vibrant colors, continues to be an important and revered art form in China today!
